On March 30th, 2017, at 10:34 PM, Newport News Police were dispatched to the Popeye’s Chicken located in the 11700 block of Jefferson Avenue in reference to a business robbery. Upon arrival, officers met with five employees who advised they were working at the time of the incident. The business had already closed at 10 PM. At approximately 10:30 PM, an armed black male entered the business through the rear door that was unlocked. The unknown black male brandished a firearm and told everyone to get out. The male fired one gunshot into the wall adjacent to one of the victims. A second masked black male entered through the back door carrying a plastic bag. All of the five employees ran to the front lobby and out the door. The employees ran to a nearby gas station and called police. One of the employees was counting down the register drawers when the suspects entered the business. Both drawers were left unsecured when the employees fled. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money from the business and fled through the rear door. There were no reported injuries and the investigation continues.
